North Carolina joins no-idling states
North Carolina has a new rule that limits truck idling. The rule applies to on-road vehicles greater than 10,000 pounds. It prohibits idling more than five consecutive minutes in a one-hour period but exempts idling for safety, health or economic reasons.
The state's Division of Air Quality said the rule will reduce nitrogen oxide emissions in the state by as much as 1,300 tons per year and will save vehicle operators up to 9 million gallons of fuel annually. It will also reduce carbon emissions by up to 100,000 tons a year. The rule took effect July 12.
