Qualifications and Onboarding

Hunt Transportation takes pride in hiring the most professional truck drivers the industry has to offer. See our qualifications below.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Valid Class A CDL
  • TWIC Card or eligible to obtain – Hunt will pay any related expenses
  • One year of verifiable tractor-trailer experience
  • Has passed the required company and DOT physical, the required drug test and the company in-truck driving test, and otherwise meets DOT requirements
  • Has a stable, verifiable work history
  • Has attained the minimum age of 22 years
  • Has an acceptable driving record as reflected by MVR and PSP with no major preventable accident in the most recent five years
  • No DUI or DWI convictions or positive drug screens or events in the past five years
  • Be able to perform functions set forth in the job description

Orientation Pay

As part of the employment process, all applicants cleared for hire by Hunt Transportation drivers will attend orientation in Omaha, Nebraska.

Owner operators are paid $.40 per mile up to $450 as a fuel surcharge to deadhead from their home location or last location to the orientation site. Lodging and meals are paid for while attending orientation.

Owner operators are paid $550 to attend orientation.

Orientation Expectations

  • Truck driver orientation will be held over for 3 to 7 days depending on securement experience.
  • All Hunt Transportation drivers must pass the pre-work screen to be eligible to drive for our company. Upon completion of the drug screen and pre-work screen, you will proceed with your DOT physical, then on to orientation.
  • The pre-work screen is a series of physical tests to determine a driver’s fitness to perform the necessary tasks expected of our drivers. Click here to watch the pre-work screen video.
  • In the classroom, our drivers get introduced to Hunt’s mobile communication system, a trip planning refresher, a review of safety guidelines and cargo securement designed to keep you, and those with whom you share the road safe.

Equipment

If you already own your truck, we require it to be able to haul 46,000 lbs. and have a minimum wheelbase of 230″.

Pay Packages

Flatbed Pay Options

Option #1 – Mileage Rate

Mileage compensation is computed using practical route miles which more closely matches the actual miles you drive rather than short route miles which many other companies use in computing miles.

Additional Information

  • A quarterly safety bonus of $0.02 per mile will be paid when equal to or exceeding 27,000 miles with no safety violations

  • $50.00 stop pay
  • 100% of tarp pay
  • 65% of any LTL “add-ons”
  • Peoplenet rental is $10 per week.
  • Owner operators will receive 100% of the customer fuel surcharge

Option #2 – Percentage of Gross

  • The plan starts at 67% of the gross revenue of each load, increasing by 1% each of the first three (3) years, then 71% on the 10th year and 72% on the 15th year
  • 100% of tarp pay
  • A quarterly safety bonus of $0.02 per mile will be paid when equal to or exceeding 27,000 miles with no safety violations
  • Percentage rate of any LTL “add-ons” equal to your percentage rate of pay
  • Peoplenet rental is $10 per week
  • Owner operators will receive 100% of the customer fuel surcharge

Business Deductions

Owner operators with Hunt Transportation/Crete Carrier Corporation get the freedom of owning their own business with the backing of one of the nation’s largest privately owned trucking companies. We provide the information you need to make an informed decision. Below is a breakdown of how we handle owner operator expenses.

Required Insurance

We require four types of insurance to lease your truck with us:

  • Blanket Physical Damage— Offered based on the value of your tractor
  • Bobtail Coverage— Offered at $30 – $36 per month
  • Cargo Coverage— $15 per month
  • Workers Compensation Coverage— For most states, available at a cost of $180 per month

Plates and Permits

We fund your plates and permits upon starting with us. This cost will be deducted from your weekly settlements in installments until the plates and permits have been paid in full. Upon completing the calendar year, you will become eligible for a relicensing credit that will be used to pay for your plates and permits in the upcoming calendar year. The relicensing credit is dependent upon productivity and maintaining a current active lease with us.

Performance Escrow

A performance escrow of $750 will be deducted at a rate of $50 per week for 15 consecutive weeks.

Company Fuel Discount

Owner operators will receive 100% of the company’s fuel discounts.

Monthly Fuel Tax Charges

The paperwork required to keep track of your fuel taxes is our job! We do the calculations each month and charge it to your settlement at the end of each month.

Mobile Communication Device Fees

Onboard communications systems make it easier to get load information and are required. PeopleNet mobile communication units will be installed at no charge. Owner operators will be charged $10 per week for mobile communication equipment rental and insurance.

Hunt Transportation offers owner operators our company group rate on health, dental and vision insurance. Owner operators are also eligible to purchase additional insurance products including basic life insurance and short-term disability coverage.

Driver Referral Program

As a Crete Carrier, Shaffer Trucking, or Hunt Transportation driver, you can earn unlimited income with our driver referral program. For every driver you refer and we hire, we will pay you an additional $1,000.

Shop Discounts

Owner operators with Hunt Transportation receive significant discounts on parts and labor for maintenance and repair work in our shops.

Discount Program

All of our drivers enjoy year-round discounts and special offers from several national and local retailers and service companies.

Scholarship Program

Dependents of drivers and other Hunt Transportation employees may be eligible for scholarships. Students who attend or will attend an accredited 2- or 4-year college or university anywhere in the United States are eligible to apply for the Crete Carrier Corporation Scholarship. Other scholarships are specifically targeted to students attending the University of Nebraska or Southeast Community College. Million Mile Program

Once a driver has exceeded one million career miles driven, they join the Million Mile Club. Decals are added to the driver’s truck to recognize this achievement.

Safe Driver Program

Earn awards for safe driving! We follow the ATA guidelines when honoring your commitment to safety. The criteria we follow are 12 months of employment, 100,000 miles/year, and no preventable accidents in the last 12 months. The awards that can be received include ATA pins, patches, cards, certificates, award letters, plaques, safe driving rings, dangles, and rings with diamond chips.

  • Your average monthly miles
  • Number of safety points
  • Amount of debt
  • Length of time with Hunt Transportation / Crete Carrier Corporation
  • Amount of down payment
  • Credit score

Capitol Casualty offers low-interest rates of 7% to 9%, and with qualifying credit, your down payment could be as low as $3,000.
